Newberry County
Newberry County lies between Lake Murray and the Enoree River. Water comes from the City of Newberry inside the city and from the Newberry County Water & Sewer Authority (803-276-7020) across much of the county; many rural homes have private wells. The county holds the City of Newberry, Prosperity, Whitmire, Little Mountain, Pomaria, Peak and Silverstreet. Outside the towns many homes sit on crawl spaces or are manufactured homes, and many rely on private wells, so a hard freeze threatens well houses, pump lines and pipes under the floor. The Newberry County Building Department (1512 Martin Street, 803-321-2662) issues permits in unincorporated areas under the 2021 International Residential and Plumbing Codes, and the permit fee doubles if work starts without a permit. Newberry County Emergency Management is at 540 Wilson Road, (803) 321-2135. NOAA's cooperative weather station in Newberry recorded 8°F on January 7, 2014 and January 2, 2018, and 10°F on December 24, 2022. Newberry freeze history.

Lexington County
Lexington County borders Newberry County across Lake Murray and holds Chapin, Irmo, Lexington, West Columbia, Cayce and Batesburg-Leesville. Lake houses and second homes around Lake Murray are often empty in winter, which is when an unnoticed burst pipe does the most damage. Water service is split among several utilities, including the Joint Municipal Water and Sewer Commission, the City of Columbia and town systems, so check your bill to see who to call.
Towns: Chapin, Irmo, Lexington, West Columbia, Cayce, Batesburg-Leesville
Saluda County
Saluda County, southwest of Newberry County across the Saluda River and Lake Murray, is rural, with many homes on wells and septic systems. The Saluda County Water and Sewer Authority (106 N. Jennings Street, Saluda, 864-445-9572) serves much of the county. None of the plumbers in our directory list an office in Saluda County; several Newberry and Lexington County firms serve it.
Towns: Saluda
Laurens County
Laurens County, northwest of Newberry County, includes Laurens and Clinton. Weather alerts for Laurens County come from the National Weather Service office in Greenville-Spartanburg, not Columbia, so its freeze alerts can differ from Newberry's.
Union County
Union County, north of Newberry County across the Enoree and Tyger rivers, is largely rural, with many wells and older homes. Its weather alerts come from the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg.
Towns: Union
Fairfield County
Fairfield County lies east of Newberry County across the Broad River, with Winnsboro as its county seat. It is rural, with many homes on wells. None of the plumbers in our directory list an office in Fairfield County.
Towns: Winnsboro
Richland County
Richland County holds Columbia, the nearest large city to Newberry. During the December 2022 Christmas freeze, Columbia tied its record low of 12°F on December 24 and set a record for the coldest Christmas Eve high (28°F), and Columbia Fire answered more than 350 weather-related calls over the holiday weekend as pipes burst in homes and businesses.
